In 2008, the Simpsons had an episode that takes place in the 90s where Marge has an anti-white male feminist professor who teaches revisionist history.
It may not have been literally omnipresent like it is today, but academia has been infected since at least the early 90s.
It's been infected since the 70's, but most people wouldn't have assumed that in 1990.
Early 90s were the peak of the previous political correctness craze. It's just that mainstream institutions weren't as completely overrun as they are today, so dissent was still possible, and eventually it won, if only temporarily. The movie PCU is from, what, 1994?
You might find "Slouching towards Gomorrah" by Robert Bork (yes, him!) interesting. He shows how this all started in the 60s on-campus. It's all so tiresome.
