Open source means by definition that you aren't gatekeeping out the crazies.

Correct, but what happens when he dies or moves on?
I'm guessing the same thing any other successful gatekeeper dies or moves on. It's not a one-time event where you bolt the door shut and it stays that way forever. The price of freedom is vigilance.
It'll be like Christopher Tolkien dying and his dipshit kid greenlighting things like the Gollum game.
