Doesn't pass the metaphorical sniff test.
Why would a group risk life in prison conducting a daring robbery of half a train car full of ammonium nitrate just to start a few fires? Gasoline is widely available, effective, and raises no suspicion.
The ammonium nitrate likely leaked out of an improperly sealed hopper, or was simply a bookkeeping or dispensing error.
My guess if it was genuinely stolen, the theives are selling it to farmers on the downlow for less than they would've been charged for but still making a killing.
That or the more scary version, they are using it to prepare explosives. Either way, it's not being used for these fires, that can be done by easier, less risky methods.
Or, if we want to stick with plausible conspiracies, was diverted to go to GlowFest 2023: Oklahoma City II, Electric Boogaloo.
You don't start fires using explosives. You use accelerants. Explosives are loud, bulky, and not designed to start a fire unless they're incendiary devices, but there would be no reason to build an incendiary bomb to set a bunch of dry wood on fire. The result would be less efficient and more conspicuous.
I'm in Ontario and we're getting some of this but nothing like what I've seen from New York.
Where I am, we get a few hours every day where it looks like half the neighborhood is having a backyard fire. Smells exactly the same, too, which makes sense if we're just dealing with burning wood. This is not something we've experienced before (and I had that confirmed by a 70yo) but it's not too crazy.
New York is a totally different story. I've never seen anything like it, including from places like California and BC, who get fires every year. In fact, there were several forest fires started outside of Edmonton, Alberta but no images like New York.
I suspect there's something else happening there; it's not just the fires.
I’ve seen it in California before but it takes an exceptional fire and are very rare, like once a decade.
Maybe all that smog that they pretend isn’t there is just normally invisible (these days), but is currently combining with the wildfire smoke to create what we are seeing..?
Dunno. Probably not, but it’s just a theory.
That's like... one railcar hopper.
Dumbfuck didn't close the hopper gate completely and it leaked out.
