If this were true, Prigozhin would be rotting away in some ditch, already having had a bullet in the back of his head administered by the FSB.

Of course he could have offered it then told his own side "it was just a ruse". It sounds like something he would do. FWIW the Ukrainians thought he was lying.
So it's coming from US documents. How would they know? The Ukrainians told them. If Prigozhin survives the week, I'll bet that it's totally fake.
