I know right! Such modern times. Seriously the PS5 is limping right now with it's lack of games. When it's best selling point is it can play previous consoles, it's not doing well.
The console is nearly 3 years old.
Console gaming has become as complicated as PC gaming in terms of all the various models and console upgrades you can do. Yet it's still heavily locked down like the consoles of old.
Meanwhile PC gaming has become about as simplified as console gaming in terms of the storefronts and simplified installation processes. And you still have a computer you can use for other stuff. And you can still run every PC game that has ever been released.
This was always the great PC vs. Console debate. But now that Consoles are PCs the Console manufacturers seem to have conceded their side of the argument, even if they haven't realized it yet.
The only problem is GPUs are freaking expensive.
PS5s aren't exactly cheap
I went from PC gamer as a kid (DOS days mostly), to all-in console gamer. I bet as recently as 2019 I had 6 consoles and all hooked up and playable at any time. I did not play PC games. I do not and will not game at a desk. So you'd think I'd be the prime market for a new console, right? Yet I don't have one, and during the peak hype of old console games I sold almost all of it off and built a not all that powerful HTPC and put it on my TV. I've got my Switch and my Xbox One X and that's it.
They just aren't offering anything to get my money. I can play current thing if I really want to with my PC now with equal to console controller support. I can generally play "old thing" on my PC via native or emulation, or use my Switch or Xbox. The more crap new games get, the more old thing becomes what I do.
Steam Big Picture Mode is just their Steam Deck UI and can be set to start when you boot your PC. It pretty much turns your PC into a console
I'm in the same boat. I used to play exclusively console games, but nowadays, with the decrease in games I'm interested in being on consoles I own, there was no reason to upgrade, especially when there are still so many Xbox 360 games I haven't played yet, and older stuff I can just emulate on the PC. No reason to get a PS5 or whichever Xbox is out right now.
Yeah I have an external hard drive with every PS2 game ever made on it, and I just randomly play them on the PC with emulation. The render upscaling breathes new life into a lot of them.
Also browse the abandonware website and randomly download games that look interesting. Sometimes find one that can't run on Win10, and firing up XP is kinda annoying; but it's playable. And often when that's the case and a game is worth playing, there's a patch somewhere that someone's made to make it playable on Win10.
Sony and Microsoft fought to be the PC in a box, and Valve won.
