I have to do some cleaning due to friends coming over to watch Wrestlemania this weekend but I was curious if there were any wrestling fans here. I’ve been watching off and on since I was a little kid and my mom told me not to watch it. My first memory is my dad watching Hogan and Mr T doing a promo for the first wrestlemania. 80s wrestling was fun to watch as a kid and late 90s/early 00s were another boom period. Now they aren’t as edgy as they once were but can still be entertaining although some things have gotten woke. WWE network is worth the subscription just for its library of classic wrestling. Japan and Mexico have great wrestling as well.

I watched the Biography episode about Andre the Giant, and I was struck with the thought that men like him would have been the legends of the stone- or bronze-age battlefields that myths were born of.
That fucker dwarfed guys like Arnold and Hulk Hogan.
Absolutely. And he could move very well for someone his size in his younger years. His drinking stories are legendary. 108 beers in one sitting!!!!
There's a picture from one of the Conan movies where Andre and Wilt Chamberlain are holding Arnold up by the arms and it's absolutely insane to see the most jacked man on Earth look small.
I'm from the south so I started off on WCW (THE MOTHERSHIP!), New Japan tape rentals, Smoky Mountain and some ECW (which I thought was mostly bad), I stopped watching weekly when Nitro went to shits, got back in during the golden era TNA which at the time week to week was putting out better stuff than WWE. Then there was those Lucha Underground episodes that scratched my wrestling itch.
Now I watch AEW and AEW adjacent stuff. It's not perfect, but it's as close to rasslin' as I'm going to find in 2023. I tune in to WWE but if I only have time to watch one show a week it'll be Dynamite.
I accidently made c/wrestling a few years ago. I was testing this site's features and hit the confirm button by accident. Sadly, it's a dead sub, I'm not the kind of user to post and feed kindling to grow a sub. Would love a place to rant about bad wrestling and you will never find a more wretched hive of troons and female wrestling fetish enthusiast than r squarecircle. Maybe one day this place get enough folks and we can try again, the fact that c/sports gets a handful of posts a week doesn't inspire much hope.
Also, Xfinity internet service comes with peacock included.
Our tastes and timelines align pretty closely. I was a big fan of NWA/JCP, AWA, WCCW, and WWF as a kid in the 80s, then stopped entirely around 92. I picked it back up in college when I was introduced to Fire Pro and ECW in 96. Started getting AJPW tapes a year later. Dropped wrestling when WCW died, watched a little early TNA and jumped back in at the height of ROH.
These days, I watch AEW weekly and catch as many NOAH and NJPW shows as possible. WWE can have it’s moments but it’s just generally not to my tastes.
AEW hits that sweet spot Nitro did back in the day of having something for just about everyone, and it’s a treat to just get to see Omega, AmDrag, and the like just go out and create magic.
I can list all the things AEW gotten right, I won't, I'll just mention one:
Watching 62 years-old Sting diving off the balcony, I remember I had this smile on my face, I felt like a kid again watching my hero Sting do his business. It's silly and marky but I was lost in that moment, and I felt like that kid again. It's moments like that that made me love wrestling.
Well, that and Jon Moxley and Adam Page beating the ever-loving shit out of each other at Revolution.
I’m so impressed by Sting. Hogan is my all time favorite but Sting is definitely top 5
Yea I get the old school NWA feel with AEW. Outside of the dude pretending to be a woman it’s solid.
The best thing I can say about Nyla Rose is that at least it’s a fake sport and you aren’t beaten over the head with it
True. I guess since it’s constantly pushed in everything I have a lower tolerance. But you are right
I’m honestly not certain it’s ever even been mentioned on the air
That sucks, honestly I don't even think I'm going to resubscribe when they offer those $20-$25 dollar for the year deals. Don't really want to give them money.
Nice. Good to be a smark. Lol
Used to watch from around the time WCW ended to about the time Undertaker started his biker schtick.
Great times. Plus when he went back to being the dead man it was awesome
The Golden Era and the Attitude Era are basically the best there ever was.
I watched and enjoyed the 90s. Spent time with my grandparents watching because they loved it. Haven't watched since Chris Benoit death i believe
You watched during a very entertaining time. Tragic what Benoit did to his family. Now they act like he never existed
Yeah I actually really enjoyed many of the characters at the time. Do they also not mention Eddie Guerrero since he died around the same time?
He is remembered very highly. I think part of it is embarrassment for WWE. When Benoit first died it was thought that he had been a victim of a home invasion and they dedicated the whole show to him as a tribute. Then the next night McMahon opened the show and said that due to new facts coming in Chris Benoit will never be mentioned on tv again
Interesting, I was definitely too young at the time to understand what exactly happened.I always liked Benoit but finding out what went down it makes sense the league would try to hush the situation
Quick question in case the right person comes along and sees this:
Anyone know where I can find old original WCW and WWF shows? Like the ones people used to use for those 24/7 wrestling streams?
They're low quality but unedited by the WWE and that's a worthy tradeoff.
On WWE network. Through Peacock
Back in the day in Louisiana, Stone Cold Steve Austin was responsible for at least half of all young boy's entire personalities. He was basically a walking legend to us all, though I personally didn't go far enough to emulate him to that extent. I was big into Kane (mask only) and Goldberg at the time, despite being the polar sides of "gimmicky show to dude in tights fighting."
I also got kicked out of church once for doing the D-Generation X thing. Which I still do even as an adult to people for giggles.
Is your name Crash Bandicoot?
I wish. His upper body ratio is so swole I'm max jelly.
Going to WrestleMania party for a friend's birthday. No idea what to expect.
We’re you ever a big fan? I expect this year that the ones we expect to win will win. Only twist I can see is Belair keeping her title
I watched it in the 80's, and I knew the phrases from the 90's.
Watching Mankind win the Championship versus The Rock with the help of a Stone Cold chair strike is one of my favourite childhood memories.
Just during the times of Big Show, Rey Mysterio's rise and that one guy who swung in pirate style
Those two were favorites of mine. Big show was actually great lol
I was big into it during the Monday night wars. Watched both WCW and WWF until WWF ended up pretty much winning that war. Loved the N64 games by THQ, played the shit out of 'em.
I used to watch it. But just how samey it starts to get as well as a few things they sweeper under the run back in the day (Chris Benoit).
I can only take the watch the person we designated as a good guy beat the oh so evil dude until they pull a sneaky until the pay per view event that actually moves things along and that you won't get to see.
The Jericho > Pizza cutter > Dominos moment was fantastic
