You know how we look back at phrenology and cringe? Or how we look back in horror at the time when lobotomies were popular and commonly prescribed for all kinds of mental maladies, ruining thousands of peoples’ lives unnecessarily? And how we’re finally beginning to call BS on pharmaceuticals, like giving every loud boy adderal in the 90s and so forth? (That was my generation).
SURELY we’ve got it right with trans stuff though. SURELY.
They haven't stopped one iota with drugging "ADHD" boys.
Except now they also drug every boy with the slightest autist traits as well.
I have a feeling that autism is over-diagnosed. I think the whole concept of the “autism spectrum” opens up a lot of wiggle room for medical professionals to try to find issues that might not be there.
I think it's over-diagnosed, but I also think that it's becoming more prevalent at the same time. I think it's a manifestation of maladaptive traits spreading through the gene pool, traits that would have been selected against in previous centuries. Our easy, post-industrial living has removed all of the harsh Darwinian selection pressures that made is strong of body and mind.
I think that each generation from here on out will be more autistic, more mentality ill, have lower IQ and be more physically frail. Eventually we won't have enough smart and sane people to keep the lights on and food in the grocery stores. Then society will break down, the harsh selection pressures will return, the weak will die, and strong will breed and over the ensuing centuries re-populate the genome with pro-adaptive traits again.
Since physiognomy is actually real (as we see over and over again) I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't something to phrenology as well.
