Maybe I misunderstood what you meant. Here in Europe, "national service" means you get to be a slave for the government for a year, and have nothing to show for it but that you were a journeyman to grief.
Nah, my version of national service was having people trained in the military for a few years so if shit hits the fan, everyone knows how to use the heavy ordinance.
I'd prefer no draft for the simple reason that if you struggle drafting civilians for war then you're already up shit's creek by that stage.

It's idiotic to let women into the military at all. Or into the police, firefighters you name it.
They can't fulfill the physical requirements (so they have to be lowered) and they tend to cause tension and drama even if they don't want to.
