But what we often don’t consider is the racist roots of sleep and how it has been used to oppress and control people of color.

Sleep has long been used by those in power to control and subjugate people of color. During slavery, those who held power over enslaved people used the idea of sleep as a form of control. Enslaved people were often forced to work long hours, with little rest or sleep, in order to maximize their labor. This lack of sleep was used to both physically and psychologically oppress them.

Today, the legacy of this oppressive system is still present. People of color are more likely to experience sleep deprivation than white people, making them more vulnerable to health problems associated with inadequate sleep. This includes a greater risk of obesity, diabetes, and other chronic health conditions.

In addition to the physical effects, inadequate sleep has also been linked to higher levels of stress and mental health issues. Research has found that people of color are more likely to experience feelings of depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues due to lack of sleep. This is due in part to the fact that people of color often experience racism and discrimination in their daily lives, which can lead to increased levels of stress and anxiety.

It is clear that the history of sleep and its racist roots are still present today. We must recognize this history and the oppressive systems that have been put in place to control people of color. We must also work to ensure that everyone, regardless of race, has access to adequate sleep in order to maintain their physical and mental health. Only then can we move toward a more equitable and just society.
