Honestly, yeah. Especially when he pulls the gun in the store.
Not that it would make any sense. The call was over a suicidal man with a handgun, involved in a custody dispute, and showed the caller a gun. You can't really wait until he goes to a store when you have a suicidal man threatening the use of a gun, and children are involved.
Well, they also didn't assume it was reasonable for the cops to approach an armed man near the home of his estranged baby mama who called the cops on him.
Surprisingly bean-bag shotguns aren't really super effective against a determined attacker. They cause a shit load of pain, but they aren't debilitating. Tasers are actually better at incapacitating people when they work, but they're only effective around 45% of the time when deployed.
To be properly debilitating, you'd need something like a bean-bag machine gun.
I'd be okay with passing those out, it sounds fucking sweet.
too hard to grab the guy when he goes to the store?
You can but then you don't get to use all that tacticool gear the city paid for.

Agreed, but...
You do realize that when people say this they aren't proposing that the cops wait until the person actually gets to the store, right?
Well, they also didn't assume it was reasonable for the cops to approach an armed man near the home of his estranged baby mama who called the cops on him.
No surprise there.
He wasn't even wearing a shirt, wouldn't that have made those bean bag shotguns even more effective against him?

Mk19 loaded with 40mm beanbag rounds when?
Yesterday if I could.
Pathetic. All that equipment, all those men, and it achieved nothing that couldn't have been done the old fashioned way.
I used to train these green beenie larp squad types, they're absolutely insufferable. Zero self awareness.
Most of that gear can't be used to take him alive, so basically all they really had to do that was the bean-bag shotgun and talking.
Also, he drew a gun, so there really isn't much you can do when the pulls a gun except shoot him.
Why not mount a tranq dart on the drone?
