I don't think the East Germans are going to ride to the rescue. Comrade Merkel is an East German and she's more responsible than anyone else for the mess Europe is in. They do seem more based further east though, which is surely a result of having a living memory of communism. That's getting less and less potent though. There are now 2 generations who never lived through that nightmare. I hope the older generations can inoculate the younger ones against leftist subversion but I'm not optimistic.
That's scary. I remember when my east German relatives starting contacting and visiting my family. We thought they were all dead. We were mostly right. My grandfather's family is all gone, but my grandmother's family had some stragglers.
When was this? I was stationed in Aschaffenburg, a bit SE from Frankfurt, back in the mid-70s. Fulda Gap area was our section of the East German border.
Notably, the cities were already full of turks selling hashish in the parks.
About a year after the wall fell.
