Oh, for fuck's sake. And these people just acquired Eidos & with them Deus Ex, too. There goes even the thinnest ray of optimism I've allowed myself in the realm of vidya.
Is hard to get hyped anymore. Every large enough company is all in on ESG and diversity crap.
Only thing I can be optimistic about are indie games making some good games every now and then.
So long as we have the original books and film Trilogy (maybe parts of the Hobbit Trilogy as they weren't terrible, just dragged out and unnecessary changes in places) the story and fantasy will always live on
We just need to let the 'franchise' die until they realise unless they stay true to the lore, we aren't buying it.
The smart move would actually be to make it all public domain before he dies. How soon before his death is up to him, but whenever he thinks it's eminent he should do it. Absolutely nothing is guaranteed post-mortem, although I suppose a really good will could fix that.
Vidya is part of it and what Embracer's most famous for, but actually they seem to have bought the entirety of Middle-earth Enterprises (covering even the film rights) from the Saul Zaentz Company. Unfortunately I forgot to update that part of the title before hitting 'post' and can't seem to edit titles on .win.
At least we have the movies and cartoons. I would have loved a Beren and Luthien story. I doubt the Children of Hurin would be allowed. The rest is just gone.
It’s not much doom and gloom yet. The company that they are touting (Asmodee, now Twin Sails) makes some decent games. They published the Gloomhaven and made a few decent board game video game conversions. From the sounds of it, they might be stretching their wings for other games. Not sure about the other rights, though. Have to wait and see but not sure if it can get worst than now.
They will likely handle it about the same as what amazon is doing considering they are an ESG company.

"Jensen, the alt right terrorists that sprung up from Gamer Gate are threatening to bomb the town square."

Every large company is an ESG company at this point.
Best we can hope is that the creatives are actual fans of the source material.
What means "an ESG company?" I mean I know what ESG is, but isn't that term usually implied to investors, not their investments?
RIP Christopher Tolkien. You were Middle-Earth’s greatest guardian. Not even the Balrog could have got past you.
I remember having a major feeling of dread when I heard that he died

Careful. I've been expecting them to "cancel" and try to ban them any day now.
And that's why I have books and blurays, physical media forever!
Cautionary tale for all authors. Don't leave your IP to your kids or any organization.
Just essentially relinquish all ownership of it on death and let anyone that wants to "make" something of it go for it.
Let the market decide and we'd be getting competition to all this contrived woke perversion of his work.
Dave Sim is planning to have his works automatically lapse into the public domain upon his death.

Yup. Many cases of last wishes and wills being overturned by courts on behalf of feuding heirs.

Is this good news
Probably doesn't really matter one way or the other.

Sad days.
