It's a fucking livestock disease, which spreads very easily, and will devastate the industry, and may actually kill people.
Do you actually... Not know about the outbreak of this shit in the 90s, in Europe and the UK..? Really??
This is NOT Covid. It isn't something they just... "Made up" (or at least, not recently)...
There's a fucking massive outbreak in Bali, so until we know more, umm, yes..?
You can't possibly be so black and white as to suggest this is anything like Covid or Monkeypox, if that's your implication.
Come on. Things are not that simple, my dude...
Edit: I actually possibly underemphasised this. If this shit gets out, in Australia, they will slaughter potentially millions of animals, infected or not, for no reason.
That is, obviously, in and of itself, completely immoral (I would actually go with pretty evil), but it will also lead to chronic meat shortages, even beyond Australia's borders, potentially for years...
The (flow on) consequences of that...? Are enormous...
This ain't lockdowns, mate. I cannot possibly overstate that YES, I DO (temporarily) SUPPORT BANNING FLIGHTS TO AND FROM THERE, for good reason. Because we know how this spreads, how easily, and what the consequences will be.
This has happened before, and it probably will again. Australia is an island country. Tourism and "waaacism"/"discwimation" be damned. This is far more fucking important. There is no reason to let this shit in, if it can possibly be avoided...
You think just being in Bali means it'll jump on your clothes and that you'll have enough viral load from that to fly back to Australia and bring into a farm ?
That would contradict pretty much every bit of science on the subject.
Foot and mouth is hugely transmissible, the last outbreak in the UK saw the slaughter of thousands of head of cattle as well as a transport ban on all livestock. He'll you couldn't even rotate the pasture they were in. Given Australia's unique take on protecting biodiversity I'm surprised they haven't grounded flights yet, and that's before you take into account it IS zoonotic despite the difficulty it has crossing the species barrier
I don’t quite understand what is going on with the other guy in this thread…
It… It has to be a troll, right?
They’re deliberately pretending to “not know”, or “not understand”, and then coming up with heaps of conflicting information which suggests they do know, but are just trying to “gotcha” both of us…
Also, who the eff is upvoting them, and downvoting us both??
Man, this is just like Reddit. Again.
For all I know it is the same fucking troll I have had similar “discussions” with on there, smh…
Anyway, you’re right. He’s wrong.
I’m an animal biologist. I’m not coming at this from a position if total ignorance, here.
I think it’s best that we both just… Stop responding, at this point. Because this is a waste of time for both of us.
Your unhinged rant full of bold, italic has convinced me that we must implement crazy measures upon the population without yet having any details at all.
You're right, let's lockdown everything, close shops, implement vaccine passports. Won't someone think of the poor livestock!
But serious question, what does banning flights from Bali help with a Livestock disease ? Do cows travel on these flights ? My noggin' is joggin', I don't quite get what you're being unhinged about.
Dude, first, hypocrite. Second, calling you "unhinged" when you're saying "PEOPLE ARE GOING TO DIE! BAN FLIGHTS! LOCKDOWNS!" is not an insult, it's a statement of fact.
I've already explained it to you adequately.
But you've explained nothing.
What does banning flights do ?
Source: I'm literally a fucking biologist.
But you didn't explain how banning HUMAN flights prevents this LIVESTOCK disease.
Even the USDA is like "Nah brah, no need to panic or ban flights, since humans aren't carriers".
2 completely different viruses of which humans aren't carriers of the livestock version. A full ban of flights helps nothing. OP being a "Biologist" just means he sucks at his job (not that biology as a field involves viruses. OP probably tests waste water at a filtration plant).
You... You don't understand how shoes work, do you? Or, for that matter, the fabric of clothes/bags, etc..?
You... Actually don't know anything about soil-borne viruses then?
Or you actually assume that everyone going through customs is going to voluntarily WASH their shoes, first, even if it inconveniences them..?
And for that matter, we are not the US, and thank Christ for that, honestly.
But we're a hell of a lot closer to, and more connected with, Bali, than your (apparently) country, which means that this is actually of real concern, here. Your statement here are moronic, or deluded at best.
Jesus Christ, dude... You really do have no fucking idea.
Temporarily, uhh, yes?
It's a fucking livestock disease, which spreads very easily, and will devastate the industry, and may actually kill people.

they WANT an outbreak. they WANT to destroy the food supply.
Ok, since you're not OP and not that unhinged, can you explain how banning HUMAN flights prevents a LIVESTOCK epidemic ?
i would assume it could live the 6 or so hours on someone's clothes needed to get into australia

Yes. Not a transport ban on humans, not cloth bags that humans carry around.
Banning human flights is a ridiculous over reaction.
I gave the same info to OP here : https://kotakuinaction2.win/p/15IrKtW4jF/x/c/4Ob8dpRkqRw
We all agree Aussie politicians are insane, but OP is calling for them to be even more insane.

I don't answer to insults.
You're naïve/ignorant about this.
Find out for yourself.
I've already explained it to you adequately.
Maybe without the insults, I could tell you more, but nah, you can look this up yourself, at this point, frankly.
It's really not fucking hard to find this stuff out.
Source: I'm literally a fucking biologist. But I knew about this even from when I was a kid.

This is different than the human disease, hand-foot-mouth disease : https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/hand-foot-and-mouth-disease/symptoms-causes/syc-20353035
