The utter irony as "mutants" IS a derogatory term!
Apparently in 2022 being called a man is more derogatory.
Especially the shortened version "mutie[s]" that is the most likely term to follow on from it.
Because there totally are no lore friendly alternatives like X-Factor, X-Force, Generation NeXt, X-tinction, New Mutants [wait they fucked up that one already multiple times], or various others that were used to make the characters stand apart from mutants as a whole.
This is like making a new Avengers film but calling it 'People' because that's still what they are at a basic level.
X-People?
Today's pop culture is like a slow motion train wreck, and almost every article I read is the cultural equivalent of another train car flying off the tracks.
To think that just ten years ago you would have been laughed out of the room for suggesting changing the name X-Men because it's "sexist" and now studio execs openly say it. Revolting.
X-Cisnormativepatriarchy is just too much of a mouthful for them.
just use ex-men bruh
Translation: They got caught.
The Faggots
It's just basically a retelling of god-fables from other cultures.
Therefore, it's cultural appropriation.
