I believe that Ron DeSantis is going to run in 2024 regardless of what Trump does.
Have you seen his interview on the Ruthless podcast? It will give you a better insight into DeSantis's personality. He is not the type of guy to run away from a challenge. He is not going to let 2024 pass him by.
He has seen what happened to politicians like Mario Cuomo in 1992 and Chris Christie in 2012 who didn't strike when the iron was hot and missed their chance when they had a shot at winning.
Ron's whole brand is liberty over COVID. There is no way he can maintain his popularity until 2028.
He knows 2024 is his only chance.

2022 Trump just impotently screeches about the stolen election, brags about Operation Warpspeed and makes terrible endorsements. He doesn't focus on solutions to pertinent issues.

I laughed today when talking to someone about Covid because I knew someone that got it and had it rough and they asked if she’d had the vax’s and I said yeah, then the boosters and I said yeah, then the new ‘pills’ and said I don’t know, and they said “that has to be why it was rough for them then, gotta have the pills.” Some people get Covid bad and most don’t, but the mental gymnastics people do about it is probably worse. What would even be the point of the vax if you also need ‘the pills’?
Do you think, if DeSantis were to win the R nomination that he would bring Trump on as VP? Would Trump's ego allow that? Would a DeSantis campaign need to treat Trump as an enemy, destroying him in the lead up to the primaries?

To your point on the nickname, I don't think any nicknaming of DeSantis will save Trump.
