I 100% do not want them to turn "centrist", I'm ok with them being a propaganda machine as long as they are an obvious propaganda machine. Over the years even those on the left have realized that CNN is not in any way objective.
Them having a facade of neutrality means that they can dish out propaganda on key issues and be incredibly efficient.
Ideologically, centrist isn't even a real thing anyway, unless this is measured by someone having extreme positions in different areas that "balance out" by some metric. Not to be confused with "moderate" which is even more meaningless by itself. As you say, the news media acting centrist (from a US-aligned perspective) was always a "facade of neutrality".
