Ideologically, centrist isn't even a real thing anyway, unless this is measured by someone having extreme positions in different areas that "balance out" by some metric. Not to be confused with "moderate" which is even more meaningless by itself. As you say, the news media acting centrist (from a US-aligned perspective) was always a "facade of neutrality".
