Reading Foundation by Asimov
posted 4 years ago by Smith1980 4 years ago by Smith1980 +32 / -0

I’m about a third of the way in and I’m liking it so far. I’m wondering if he decided to take the Roman Empire and put it on a galactic scale. I decided to read it because I have no faith that Apple will do a good job with it.

Is the whole trilogy worth reading?

There are more? I thought it was just 3

There ended up being 6 or 7, but the rest after the original trilogy were written after Asimov's robot obsession completely took over his consciousness, so it's not only hyperfocused on the robot characters more than the humans, but also retcons some elements of the original trilogy to give the robots credit for things that he'd originally attributed to human characters.

Needless to say, just stick to the first three.

Sounds like a positive to me.

It was, but Asimov then cranked out two more sequels and two prequels/world-builders I think

The trilogy is very good imo. Foundation's Edge was decent but I thought Foundation and Earth was lacking. I never read the prequel-type ones

Asimov literally says he based the book on The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire by Gibbon

Cool. I’ll have to check it out. I thought I had heard that years ago but couldn’t remember

I know the Woke mafia doesn’t like him now

Absolutely - that and his first three R.Daneel robot novels.

The later ones not so much. Foundations Edge is just OK and it all goes downhill from there.

I love his robot novels.

I stopped at 3. I just felt like the brilliance of Asimov's world building began to be overshadowed by his inability to write characters I cared about at all. Characters are tossed and replaced every couple of chapters, which for the reach of the story makes sense. But when it takes several chapters to become invested in them just to have them get tossed away got in the way of my enjoyment.

Excellent trilogy, like others here I’ve not read the later books. Avoid the show at all costs, it is diarrhetic garbage
