Even if I crank up the brightness on my monitor I have to stand up and look at my monitor from above to hit the angle where the TFT is brightest to barely see anything.
My monitor isn't the best for dark areas so it's a common problem for me. I usually have to crank up gamma all the way in dark/horror games. Doesn't help that I usually keep monitor brightness fairly low to reduce eye strain. Not sure how representative that is of most people out there, though.
On a side note, part of that is how it is being played. The WebGL release is a little lighter than the editor preview. Running it fullscreen, without the lighter Unity UI and white windows titlebar to interfere with lower contrast areas, improves visibility as well.
