Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. This very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be “cured” against one’s will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals.
- Lewis, God in the Dock: Essays on Theology, 1948
Arguably, In Western society, the "robber barons" have become the "omnipotent moral busybodies", which is both... Supremely ironic, and something I bet Lewis couldn't have even dreamed up in his worst nightmares/fantasy books...
Amazing, really.
Technically, the coming together of state and corporation in such a way matches the definition of fascism quite closely, but of course, society would not have us point out such things. Hence the overuse of calling everyone "fascists", or "alt right Nazi man babies". Again, I would point out the irony there, but I think you get the idea... facepalm
Problem is that fascism and national socialism are two different things. Similar, but not the same and no one teaches those differences until you're at the college level...or at least they did when I was in college 25 years ago.
What we have today is the coupling of corporations and government of Fascism, mixed with the internationalism of communism infused with a racial ideology like national socialism, mix those together and you have wokism. It's as if someone said, "Hey lets take the worst of the worst of 20th century ideologies and put them together..."
Calling bullshit on this little sleight of hand. National socialism is only racial insofar as it puts the people of the nation first (and most nations were closer to ethnostates at one point). The racial ideology of today's left is explicitly not national socialism because the left only attack the native white populations of Western countries. This is an inversion of national socialism where the wealth and opportunities of a nation are not reserved for the people of that nation but are redistributed instead to the rest of the world via immigration.
I know the impulse to "play fair" and toss everyone under the bus equally is strong, but you can't just gloss over these details in order to include "muh Nazis" in your list of today's bad guys.
Go back and reread Mein Kampf. Racial bias was very much apart of the ideology.
A lot of "woke" - and indeed the term itself - comes from a cult from the 1970s that was basically a more radical offshoot of The Nation of Islam (Farrakhan's nasty bunch, basically a black American version of the Moral Majority, but more violent.)
Really good observation. I doubt people like Bezos or Gates are actually woke, but it gives them power and influence.
We are literally at the point where people are begging to go back to the "normal" of robber barons rather than what we have now.
I realise there is likely not to be anything "sincere" about our current Globohomo elites, but nonetheless...
Man had a point. In 1948!!
I see the first couple of sentences quoted by people all the time, but thought the whole thing was worth a post, for a change.
Bloke had some very good points. The Screwtape Letters is also worth a look-in (play or book), if you're interested in the man's... Philosophy, or thoughts, as it were, on this sort of thing.
More interesting than his good mate Tolkien, in that regard, IMHO...
He is one of my favorite authors and thinkers. My Bible study group at church recently read Mere Christianity
Mere Christianity should be read by every Christian. It’s an amazing book.
And I'd rather live under omnipotent moral busybodies than a managerial technocracy. At least with a moral busybody there's a humanity you can appeal to.
C.S. Lewis can be forgiven for this omission though, as managerial technocracies were still in their infancy when he wrote this.
Our current moral busybodies turned a blind eye to months of violent unrest only to then unequivocally condemn an unarmed riot and anyone who doesn't want an experimental therapeutic created by an evil corporation. And when I say condemn, I mean "wish death upon". Forgive me if I find your claims of humanity somewhat questionable.
THEY HAD ROPES AND PEPPER SPRAY THEY MURDERED AOC AND WERE ABOUT TO HANG TED CRUZ
That's... Pretty much exactly what I was getting at, with the comment I just wrote, literally as you posted that, lol.
This tyranny has nothing to do with the good of its victims. This is a pyramid of sociopathy. The base of this pyramid is hysterical women whose temporary mental issues have been turned into permanent insanity by SSRIs.
