I see that the show (the one from the 90s/early 00s) is on one of the streaming services I have. Is it worth binge watching?
I do remember when they announced the race swapped reboot that Anita Sarkesian was upset about it, and I foolishly thought that that would give her some understanding about people who are upset by something they love getting crapped on.
I mean... eh? It has some good and some bad points. It was first made back in an era when attractive women were still allowed to be on television, all of the female leads are good looking, as are many of the minor female characters.
At the same time it was probably the earliest example of pandering to the rainbow freaks that I've ever seen, with one major character suddenly just turning gay out of literally nowhere later on in the show.
And then there's the matter of Whedon. A pozzed serial molester who abused most of his actresses.
So I'd say in the end it's up to you whether it's worth watching the show or not.
Oh yea I forgot about the lesbian part. I’ve reached a point where I personally have no interest in lgbt content. They are free to make shows but I’m not interested. If I watch I can fast forward like I did with Torchwood
The gay didn't just come out of nowhere, and I quote "Also, I think I was a lesbian!"
Ethan Van Sciver once said of Joss Whedon that all of his characters talk like an ugly redhead who had to be funny in high school in order to be likeable.
I enjoyed Buffy when it first came out because I was young enough then to be easily swayed by emotional manipulation. If you watch it for the first time as an adult, especially without that nostalgia to fall back on, I really don't know what there is to enjoy about it. It's a teen soap opera and nothing more. Once you get past the clever dialogue, which can be genuinely funny in some places, it's not much more than a precursor to the CW, maybe with a bit more character consistency, but with the same constant refocusing away from the action and onto emotional and relationship drama. If you're not a teenager, it's really hard to relate to any of it.
That makes sense. Thanks!
CW?
"The CW Network" would be my guess. They did Flash, Arrow, and other DC comics shows which despite being about superheroes focused an absurd amount on relationship drama.
CW?
EDIT- Apparently it stands for ViacomCBS and WarnerMedia.
Buffy seasons 1 and 2 we're pretty cool. The middle seasons are meh, and the last two seasons are bleh. Fuck willow
Would totally fuck her, at her Eurotrip age at least.
Willow wasn't in Eurotrip, that was Dawn.
Oof, you're right.
They are, or maybe were in the case of Hannigan as her stint in How I Met Your Mother both tainted seeing her since Lily was a complete cunt and Alyson sort of hit the wall as the series went on.
That's fair. To give a slightly meta example during one of the Xmas episodes Ted refers to her as a "Grinch", however as the narration of the series is him telling the story to his kids, "Grinch" is not the word he really used at the time and it's heavily alluded to have been "cunt". Lily of course doesn't do anything to help dissuade this because she literally steals the Xmas tree and presents like an actual Grinch later on which is just one example of her extremely petty nature throughout the show.
If you like Whedon sass and 110lb girls effortlessly manhandling 200lb dudes, I guess it's a good show?
I prefer the movie. Kristy Swanson is both super hot and based IRL.
Yes. Swanson is cool. I need to see the movie
I've tried watching a few episodes and thought the characters were too Valley Girl for my tastes. Had that late 90s/early 00s high school drama-comedy vibe that I personally I stopped enjoying once I got a bit older.
I missed the earlier seasons as I didn't get the channel that aired them, then started watching on Netflix. I think I ended up stopping during season 2- not because it was bad, just got caught up in other things. I was enjoying it.
It is a product of its time. What seemed new and innovative back then, quirky and fun, is now the fucking norm without any of the cultural reference or nuance. This is the other side of the coin when watching something from the past.
There is an obsession with race swapping. I just found it funny that Anita Sarkesian was upset about them screwing up a show she enjoyed but attacks men who don’t like the 1000th race/gender swapped reboot of a show they like.
Exactly. A lot of these race/gender swaps could have taken a character from the existing universe or created one. Like Dr Who could’ve used a female time lord or taken one of the Doctors former companions and given her a spin off
