Your dad likely believes what he sees on TV, reads in the newspaper, gets delivered to his Google Feed, and is told to him by friendly government officials. His opinion is invalid.
It is a sensationalised headline. What they did - drugging puppies, cutting their vocal chords and leaving them to be bitten by bugs carrying infectious diseases - is already fucked up without claiming the sandflies were going to "eat them alive."
Yeah, that’s sort of how I explained it, after I read it…
It’s still evil, and… He still didn’t care. Even with that explanation. Which… Says a lot, really. :-/
Also, let’s be clear, here: these dogs get killed afterwards. I 100% guarantee you that. So… Mutilated, tortured, and then killed. Probably shot, too, rather than “put to sleep”…
Yeah, there’s no way anyone can justify this, no matter how you swing it…
Implication in the quote that he thinks you didn't read past the headline. But I'm going to suggest he may be pitiable - it could be that he's subconsciously afraid to start re-evaluating his priors. Probably a common problem over there nowadays.
To make a classical reference, the allegory of the cave as written by Plato, describes a possibility. You've left the cave and seen the true world, returned to the cave to bring freedom and enlightenment, but the others in the cave lash out at you in response. Such things get compacted in various memes, like the red pill stuff.
Put another way, your father's probably happy or content with his worldview and he sees an unhappy person advocating for a different view (and part of his worldview is probably that all alternatives are lies), so he'll think that taking this view will remove his comforts. I add the parenthetical so you aren't misled into thinking your happiness would lure him out of the cave.
Yeah, I view this, and people’s reaction to it, as an “empathy test”…
Which my own father just failed. And then used it to attack me for “believing what you read online, and lapping up sensationalized headlines”…
Fucking hell…
