Have you read some closed captioning? I think sign language translators are 100% necessary. Not that everyone needs to learn sign language but it's still helpful to have some people who do.

I've also never met someone who can sign "just because" - the ones I know leaned it to aid a relative or loved one, or in my aunt's case to teach disabled children in her very rural town.

Yes and it gets it right 99/100 times. It certainly doesn't make sense to have a signer taking up 30% of the screen just because of a few random CC errors.

Closed captioning is terrible. Worse, when you're watching something like Beastars, you get two different versions of the dialogue if you can hear ....

(They didn't have loudness limiters on the original cassette walkmans. Also, cadet-related hearing damage I was warned about, plus concerts, front row of David Copperfield in front of his speakers, I have problems understanding human muttering.)
