The deal was to not treat the south as a conquered state and the south wouldn't act like one. Seems one side has decided to reneg. The occupied Confederate States must reject the unlawful rule of the United States.

Fascinating, I never knew that. When I was growing up (not in the South but in a "border" state) there was not much derision for the Confederacy in education, even in "Social Studies" classes. The Civil War was just treated as a national tragedy, the war of brother against brother. It was credited with ending slavery, but that was the past and we couldn't judge them by today's standards. The South wasn't "evil". Gone With the Wind and The Dukes of Hazzard were considered classic American entertainment. This wasn't that long ago.

It was only years later that I started seeing anti-South thought become more prominent, I suppose emanating from leftist academia and Hollywood. I learned that people in Northern cities had a completely different education growing up. While we were learning about the complex issues that led to strife between the states, they were learning that the Confederacy was evil. They were proud that the noble Union conquered the rotten plantation owners. It was just funny to me at the time how different states teach different things, but now I realize that was an early warning sign of the cultural divide that exists today.

Something that probably helped form your areas educational standards was probably the fact that the war really did tear apart families over it.

Yea, he was acknowledged as a general. Before they broke off he was an army officer. Good grief these ppl waste so much time being mad about the long dead confederacy.

It’s very weird their new doubling of their hatred for Lee. After the war he encouraged former confederate soldiers and officials to apply for citizenship and take the required oath and did it himself as an example. He essentially used his platform of celebrity to push the south to move on at many speaking events. and then lived out the rest of his days not stirring up resentment but reconciliation.

Just look at how he ran Washington university (now/for now Washington and Lee University). Or his freeing of all the slaves he and his wife inherited, or his pushing for emancipating the slaves during the civil war. Or his views on succession (he was not a fan of the idea). Literally the only thing that made him side with the south was his home state Virginia left the union.

Even his enemies had nice things to say about him at the end of the war.

What is it with weirdo virtue signalers bragging about how they read the Wapo or NYT?

I suppose Hitler as never Fuhrer or Chancellor, then. Doenitz was never General and Rommel was never Field Marshall.

They were all just random dudes who magically got the job in a fucking lottery.

I love how these weak little insect people think they're anything compared to these men just because a war they fought in was tangentially related to slavery.

Ignorance, him being incapable of defending himself since he’s been dead for 100+ years, and easy virtue signal points from other people who know very little about the man.

They don't capitalize Confederate, they don't capitalize white when referring to race, but they do black... Do they think the rules of grammar grant some kind of social prestige? Satan is capitalized, Nazi is capitalized, it helps us determine we're talking about a proper noun, something distinct and specific. It makes reading easier, especially for foreigners. If it's capitalized, you can suss out what kind of word it is compared to other nouns in the sentence.

They also called him general because he was a general too, if he didn't join the confederates he would've been the guy they brought in to fight the confederates.

He only picked his side because he didn't want to fight on the offense on his own home state.
