I know the rule is if it's before a word that start with a vowel to put 'an' but that just looks and sounds wrong.
Ackchyually, "an" is used when the word starts with a vowel sound, not just a vowel. Europe starts with a "y" sound which isn't considered a vowel sound in this instance.
For an opposite example, you say "an hour" even though it starts with the consonant "h".
And then you encounter the word 'Horrific' and end up in a state of quantum superposition.
