The John Wick franchise has issues but it's not like Matrix or Star Wars where large numbers of fans simply don't acknowledge the existence of the sequels.
If you really dig down there's only ever been one franchise EVER where a sequel was unquestionably superior to the original and that was Back to the Future III.
Just sequels? Terminator 2, The Godfather Part II, Evil Dead 2, The Raid 2, The Dark Knight, and Aliens? If you want to stretch it the definition of sequel, Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
They don't follow the sequel script pattern; they're solid films in their own right that require no knowledge of the preceding films. They are installments in the same sense that Bond films (typically) are.
