Holy shit, you’re right my mind is boggled. I used to follow both of these guys. I was a subscriber to Sullivan when he first introduced the subscription model for the Dish, and I was pleased as a teenager to receive a reply from Sam Harris when I emailed him my appreciation for The End Of Faith. I’m greatly disappointed that they’re being so ridiculous. Sam Harris says Trump is unironically worse than Hitler? Wtf? So much of what they believe about Trump you can tell is just a result of the most histrionically uncharitable interpretation of some innocuous comment or gesture that wouldn’t raise an eyebrow if exhibited by someone else. It’s incredibly irrational and I expected better of both of these men. You can hear/read the raw emotion in their statements, and the whole schtick of both of these men is that they are unbiased and rational assessors of the cultural landscape. I remember James Lindsay recently said that a large part of the reason that it took him a long time to admit he needed to support trump is because he didn’t want to admit that he had been wrong. It seems that sort of dissonance it at play with Harris and Sullivan (they can admit all the problems with Biden) but they can’t seem to get over their emotional hurdle. Sullivan has always had an irrational bitchy-gay-guy side to him but to see Sam Harris, Mr Atheist, be such a little fucking bitch is something. -10 respect
