Of course physical exercise is great too and can really help you along, but it is very difficult to out work a bad diet. Calorie count explicitly for a while and then you'll get a good enough idea to roughly calculate throughout the day to ensure you're in a calorie deficit.
I would strongly advise getting some blood tests as well. Being deficient in something like Vitamin D is very common and easy to remedy, and fixing it can do wonders for your health.
