I'm no connoisseur, but I tried something with saffron in it, and honestly I don't know what the big deal is. There's other seasonings that are just as tasty. Or maybe the big deal is that it's so expensive?
It's subtle. There shouldn't really be a lot else going on in a dish with saffron.
That said i don't bother with it. If i need to turn something vaguely yellow I'll throw in a dash of turmeric
It's expensive because it's a pain in the ass to grow and harvest.
