I appreciate the idea behind wokeness scores, but in execution I think this guy isn't scoring things very well.
Control is a bit woke. Women all good, men all bad. I think it's a little bit woker than baseline, but he gives it a 3/20.
Greedfall is pretty woke, gets 4/20. Tons of black scientist faction, interracial/gay romances, and lots of women-good/men-bad. It was surprisingly woke for an Eastern European studio.
Outer Worlds is WOKE AS FUCK, only 6/20. 100% women good, men bad. 100% capitalism evil. 100% immigration good. There's a multi-hour companion quest where you try and support your companion's gay romance.
Meanwhile Borderlands gets a 12/20. WTF? It's woke, but it's certainly not twice as woke as Outer Worlds.
The rubric is all messed up. Plague Tale: perfectly period accurate 1/5pts, Outer Worlds: Space Western 0/5pts.
Outer Worlds is so committed to being woke that the Gay Companion quest is longer than nearly everyone else's combined, and the only one you will have to literally work for by going everywhere back and forth.
I agree 100% with your points. The review does help though. It made me not want to play Outer Worlds even if it had a low score. The final score is not good.
It would be better if people just had a "wokeness complaint board" for movies and games. Like after playing or watching something they can leave a comment about anything they happened to notice.
It was on reddit today and it was worth reading the reviews. EDIT: I was especially disappointed in The Outer Worlds I was looking forward to this one but the all woman strong type and all man are idiots/evil is a deal breaker for me. I do not play games that hate me.
I like this concept and site. Wokeness scores are great idea.
I didn't really get a woke vibe from the Outer Worlds at all. There's some fantasyland politics, you know factions that hate each other and they whine and complain like you'd expect. But you can pick which side in every case even to the point of just offing all the people you don't like should you so choose. To be fair I don't go tallying men vs women in a game at all though. The ones that bug me are the really obvious woman good man bad (e.g. The Last Jedi) or putting women in historical situations they weren't in. I don't want women storming the beaches of Normandy with me. Not saying his take is necessarily wrong, just offering a second opinion.
I have not played Outer Worlds but from what others are playing is against capitalism, pro immigration and woman good/man bad so it would fail deep in to SJW for me.
Fair enough. It's been months since I played it so I could have just forgotten. I had fun with the game but it's quite possible I ignored the wokeness, as I don't really even remember the story to the game at all.
