There is no organic talk about the movie. You never hear someone say they went to see it, no one is quoting things from it, there are no memes.
Compare that to Obsession, within the first week it was the talk of the town everywhere. There were memes. People were making parody videos about it.
Normal people hear "Nolan + Greek literature" and immediately nope out. And that's even before the casting of dindus and troons.
There's absolutely memes and AI parody videos of Lupita Nobongo and Ellen Page! 😂
Yeah, but those are memes created about the movie from the outside, not memes born from the actual movie itself. It's like Morbius and people morbing all over the place. You didn't see the movie to be in on the joke.
The closest thing I've seen to a meme is the bafflement people have over Odysseus literally stating: "Our age of bronze is over."
But there ARE memes. I think what you mean to say is that there's no community forming around the movie.
I think it's a little too early for that, but I don't see it happening anyhow. Having "streamed" the movie, it certainly takes itself too seriously for that, and it borrows its boring structure from "Tenet" -- "Greetings, stoic protagonist. You must travel to the next location and meet with another NPC. They will show you where to travel next and which NPC to meet there, and so on, until the movie must end and you look into the camera to bluntly state the vague meaning of this adventure or whatever."
At least we know that wasn't an "accident" of Tenet's script but rather Nolan's limited storytelling. More than a few reviewers have mentioned how "The Odyssey" is a series of "... and then, and then, and then", much like Tenet. The story doesn't take the protagonist anywhere, he's literally told "Go there" just to be told "Now go there" by someone else. Once you notice it, it makes watching the movie a chore.
I do not appreciate being told what I mean. I said what I meant to say. The memes that exist are not being born from the internal content of the movie, but from the external perception of the movie. There is a very significant difference in what that means for its cultural impression.
