And putting the hunt for Gollum to screen will involve making up a ton of stuff

Yeah, like the Scooby Doo-esque chase scene with Smaug inside the mountain for The Hobbit.

Jackson did a pretty decent adaptation of LotR, but nearly everything he actually changed made the story worse.
