Obviously AIDS spread like wildfire because of all those blood transfusions. You remember, right? Millions of people just having blood transfusions with millions of other people...big fad in those days.
Sadly yes. Non-gays mostly got it through transfusions. The gov't didn't ban gays from blood donation for like a year? Ensuring thousands of non-gays got it too, as was their dogma.
