Until the past few years of them constantly killing people with 18 wheelers, Sikhs had a pretty good reputation compared to the rest of the subcontinent. Might just be behind the curve that since the floodgates have been opened that we now almost entirely get the worst of the worst of all ethnic groups the third world has to offer.
You are 100% right. I grew up knowing basically nothing about Sikhs because the 10 that seemed to exist in the West were apparently the only ones that were actually nice and not actively destroying society. Now that more have come over like all immigrant groups we see the absolute dregs of society that I'm sure their home nations are happy to see them go.
Still, there were enough of them around me to at least be aware of them even in the 90s. They were never a problem until post-COVID hordes.
I remember when there was a shooting of Sikhs that made national news a decade ago, there were a lot of comments like "Why would anyone target Sikhs?" with replies like "They probably misidentified them as Muslim".
The most deadly terrorist attack in Canadian history was committed by Sikhs. They all disavowed the group after the fact, but all of their "legit" groups have ties or even share membership.

It's likely because there isn't actually many of them about I believe there is only a few million compared to other ethnics.
