Mork and I have absolutely no use for "masculinity" as its traditionally conceived, and so it's possible that we read in a way that makes it appear like there's some wiggle room in there somewhere. My eldest is trans, so I'm familiar with some of the dynamics - they identified the same things you have. We use the characters as tools to explore our own thoughts, so it's no big surprise that other people might also.
