Saw this come up earlier, need to watch for myself. I do have to wonder what he saw in the meta verse, even assuming most people like stuff like that the technology is nowhere near what it needs to be.
He spent 88 billion to preserve 1.56 trillion dollars of market capitalization and convince the world that his social media company wasn't a stagnant myspace clone. Once AI hit the market, he immediately pivoted and started 'chasing that dream' and abandoned his trash-verse PR project.
I doubt he actually saw anything. Just money laundering, tax credits and lawsuit evasion through rebranding, and selling off assets to form a 'new' company
He might have read Ready Player One and thought the dystopian sci-fi story about a decaying society kept going by a single megacorp that runs a monopoly on a digital world where most people live vicariously in and thought 'holy shit I need to get in on this'. He basically wanted to make Second Life for normies. Might have worked if he tried it 10 years later when the Roblox generation are all adults, but not so when trying it on Facebook boomers.
