I'm not sure how they were going to blockade at all, but probably pursuing ships and pirating them? If it isn't complete bluff.
If you exit the strait, you're still near Iranian waters. Also, I question the extent to which Murica can "freely interdict" Chinese ships, or whether they want to interdict Indian ships.

Ship owners could easily find a liberal judge in NYC and get awarded billions in financial compensation
Or maybe just a normal judge with sense?
Obviously American ships can freely interdict tankers once they pass the strait. They're kind of sitting outside the strait right now actually.
