As far as I can tell, this is the first time that's happened without going down for server maintenance. It dropped all the way to 8,664 about 5 hours ago.

Yes, I think so. It's a milestone in that it's the first time it's ever happened; other early mornings were higher than that. Indeed, the low point last Thursday, the 2nd, was 10,684, an 18% drop in 6 days. It really is falling off an absolute cliff.
Yes. This game cost hundreds of millions of dollars and took half a decade to make. Dropping below 10k concurrent players a month after release is catastrophic for Bungie and Sony. It's awesome.
Well yes as it also roughly predicts how high the daily peak will be. As of this moment, it hasn't even hit 20K CCU.
Remember, season 2 isn't out for another few months. With the rate Marathon has been declining, there will likely be no audience for a season 2.
