There's no crime gene, but there is a "propensity to shoot and stab someone gene". (twitter.com)

Gattaca was a society that thought it understood genes but was actually deeply incompetent (investigators who don't investigate because they think their genes and forensics DNA tests prove their work or doctors who think genes somehow stops the addictive chemical properties of nicotine).

If society actually started dealing with dysmorphic individuals (which genetic testing would easily find the appropriate genes in them) it would be more likely to be way more competent than gattaca since it's actually dealing with a problem that is observable and preventable. Gattaca's scientists and society as a whole were just lazy and up their own ass.

Forgive me, but what specifically were the lazy scientists in Gattaca not investigating?

Are you referring to the fact that Jude Law's Chad paraplegic athlete character smoked & drank after his accident?

The investigators for the murder that started the film's plot were lazy and didn't investigate the murder properly.

The scientists\doctors were convinced people can't get addicted to drugs if they have the right genes. It's a very lazy protocol to operate on the assumption that personal accountability or even basic bio-chemistry has no bearing on life outcomes just because a genetic test suggests an individual shouldn't have issues. I didn't write the scientists should be investigating things though since there's nothing in the movie that they were tasked with. I did write that they were lazy, which I have just established that they're protocols are indeed lazy.
