It's definitely the case that they're hiding the number of wounded. It seems the dead would be more difficult to hide, not? Centcom is regularly announcing them, although some are being hidden in other forms - e.g. that NYPD guy.
They have family members. There is a media thankfully a tiny bit critical (Reuters I believe revealed the large numbers of wounded in the Kuwait strike). There are obituaries (which is how we know the NYPD case).
Has the US military hidden casualties in the past? Not that I know, but then again, I don't know that they have hidden wounded and they did do it this time.
What you say would explain why Trump is melting down, although it's impossible to confirm. It also doesn't track previous US practices as far as I know. Maybe they did hide contractor deaths, or at least didn't announce them?
Edit: the number of wounded is also stratospheric compared to the number of confirmed dead. Isn't the ratio normally 4-1? That would make 50 dead, not the 16 (?) of right now. Or there is something else going on.

Why should it be difficult?

So? It's not like you can freely communicate with your family while being in an active war zone.
They're not. They only talk about shit that can't be hidden.
