It's amazing how bad it got so quickly. I think many are convinced it's bots, and while I am sure there is some botting involved, I think that is just how sites like this work. It mirrors what went down on reddit quite well.
For sites where visibility depends on upvotes and downvotes, a small majority being hostile to the minority will continue to isolate said minority and drive it from the site. This creates a vicious cycle that makes it exponentially more hostile for the minority opinion until it is largely driven from the site.
Of course, reddit had a lot more heavy handed tactics employed from the very top admins as well.
