His life's work was dedicated to trying to find a way to rise above it in an entirely self-contained, autonomous way without making oneself subservient to the will
and whim of a broader community, and then he spent his final years spiraling into syphilitic insanity, consumed by an increasing sense of self-loathing because he couldn't understand why he hadn't lived up to the impossible bar he'd set for himself.
He did pretty accurately predict the entire 20th century though.
