They could easily pull ahead again if they expanded the “breeding” system to create hybrids and new evolutions instead of random pojemon people will immediately forget about. That and actually made gameplay semi challenging again.
Honestly I’ve only played the legends games and a tiny tiny bit sword. They did have day/night cycles for Pokémon not sure about regions, but I’m betting not, there’s too many previous regions for them to try that at this point. Agree gold/silver was peak, especially for gameplay.

Did they ever put features back in like day and night cycles relating to when Pokemon appear or travelling between past regions?

Play the new silver/gold and the black and white. I never played beyond that but those were golden
