Last time I saw a game population collapse this hard was DNF Duel, but even that took a couple weeks to really see a sharp drop off. Hilariously enough, that game is still online years later despite having a concurrent player count of approximately 8 people at peak hours, while High Guard is already getting ready to shutter the whole operation.
Yeah fighting games are basically expected to drop off a cliff at some point. And they usually don't have huge costs for servers or maintenance. For a live service multiplayer focused game though, you would probably expect them to want to keep it running for at least a few years.
