All charities are scams. I’m better off giving money directly to the person in need.
Don't even do that. If you see a homeless person, ask him if he's hungry and go buy him food. Ignore otherwise.
alternatively, only give money to people you know and trust. strangers are often more likely to be scammers or drug addicts, but if someone you personally know has fallen on hard times then you can easily judge whether financial assistance would help them.
