I hate taxes in general but does anyone here actually know an old person who lost their home over property taxes? I don't. I think old people can and should pay the same taxes as everyone else.
What do you consider completely broke? I could agree only 10% of people are decent with money but there’s a lot of people who have shit budgets but still make enough to pay their bills and whatnot.
Property taxes are completely fucking immoral. They're institutionalized covetousness. We've had organization, bureaucracy, and technology enough for decades, to assess what services people are being provided, and charge them appropriately for them.
Property taxes is the opposite. They charge arbitrarily, based on how much people would pay to have your shit. That's ridiculously piratical. In so many cases; Don't use City water? Doesn't matter, pay for it anyway. Don't use City trash? Doesn't matter. Live on a dirt road, or your neighborhood built and maintains your own road? Doesn't matter. Are you nudged out into unincorporated territory, so you don't have voting rights? Doesn't matter.
Paying for the mere privilege of not losing your property at the hands of men with guns, the rate determined by how much other people want what you got, is a goddamn disgrace.
Property tax on unimproved value with a generous lower exclusion, for your primary residence (let's say it's only the top 10%, letting you go be a hermit in peace and never be bothered), is the least bad other than tarrifs, minor sin taxes and direct fees for services.
It's not even how much other people would pay for your place, they don't have some fancy program to look at the sales in your area or anything like that.
Its whatever some unelected government employee thinks others would pay. If they're in a particularly bad mood? Looks like your assessment just doubled.

I object to it on the grounds of how it undermines the very concept of ownership.
If I already paid to own something then why am I paying the government rent on it? Either I own it or I don't.
Exactly, my friend, exactly.
You don't own it.
Then why the fuck should I pay for it?
All taxes are bad.
