Watch two of the relationships break up mid-season and the guys console each other by going out to an interspecies bar and having a train run on each other.
They kept trying with the Trill symbiont but it never takes, turns out you're not suppose to insert the symbiont in your butt. It doesn't work that way, now matter how it's shaped!
This might be a jest, but your comment has actually been ringing true for various shows quite often, just with the female characters instead. According to GLAAD, it's easier for the general public to digest.
But they will absolutely start moving in the direction of more aggressively pushing the male-male dynamic you outline if they haven't already.
