Interesting Christopher Caldwell quote on the Venezuela coup
posted 152 days ago by AntonioOfVenice 152 days ago by AntonioOfVenice +30 / -0

Empires seem to deploy their powers to the maximum, desisting only when they no longer have the wherewithal. We may soon be reminded that it was American decline that put Mr. Trump in a position to set American foreign policy in the first place.

He's a boomer fighting to deprogram himself from a lifetime of red/blue tribalism and still uses 'conservative' lazily when he doesn't have another adjective. It's meaningless. He described the UK's George Galloway (a stereotypical oldie-socialist) as 'conservative'.

My point stands. He criticized Trump's action in Venezuela on the basis of "us vs them" political tribalism when it was simply a manifestation of realpolitik. Trump isn't thinking ideologically: his entire message to Venezuela was: you're in our hemisphere. You're our vassal state, so you're going to cease all hostile actions targeted at us, stop selling your oil to China and give it to us instead, and if you cooperate you'll have food on your store shelves again. And he sent that message in a way that cost the United States almost nothing. I fail to see why any American would be opposed to that move unless it was for ideological reasons.
