I had family in Dresden at that time... As far as we can tell, none of my relatives survived. Either that or they really didn't want to write their relatives and took on new names.

In (iirc) early 1945 a US correspondent took a poll of French people, mostly women. Who did they prefer? US GIs or the Nazis?
They strongly preferred the Nazis.
Germans spoke French more often, at least they tried to learn it. GIs did not. GIs were rude & prone to drunkenness, violence & rape. & etc.
