Dr Ahmed said the driving force behind the Islamic extremism that had grown over the past three decades was “the feeling that your first and foremost identity is to the ummah — the transnational community of Muslims”.
“They feel this is a civilisational fight for their religion, God and the future of the world,” he said.
“Even though you’ll get lots of Muslims come out and say there’s no justification in the Koran, realistically you can read it and potentially find justification. That’s always been the case.”
